Deaf Studies Trust

Deaf Studies Trust (DST) is a national charity (set up in 1984) for the benefit of the deaf community in the UK  It applies research-based knowledge to practical issues for deaf children and adults. It developed from the Centre for Deaf Studies in the University and many of the project reports from the Centre can be accessed from here.

We carry out local small-scale consultation as well as large scale national and multinational projects. We work in partnership with other organisations. We keep overheads low and the Trust does not make profits nor keep large amounts in the bank but rather to engage in specific projects according to precise work plans and timescales. As a charity we have to report annually to the Charities Commission and you will find our reports, from the link below.

Research is vital in discovering deaf people’s needs and finding solutions.  DST does not give grants but receives funding for different projects in the UK

Since 1984, we have worked on projects with babies, children, young adults, deaf people’s life experiences and with elderly deaf people.  Recently we have specialised in community research, Deaf blind issues and in video telephony and relay services.

All of our research projects have Deaf people working on them

DST is also deaf-led with a Deaf Chair and a majority of deaf trustees

What is happening now, is in the News section

Past and present DST work is in the Projects and Timeline section

We are gradually creating a Deaf History section – this will take some time to complete

Reports and publications of the Trust are in the Downloads section.

Information about the Trust, the Trustees are in the Annual Reports

The DeafStation news site was set up by the Trust. This needs updating and possibly can become a developing News provision in BSL.
